Courtney takes a Podium at the Nikon SuperGP
Sunday 24th October 2009
Jim Beam Racings James Courtney has finally got his hands on the prized Surfboard Trophy finishing third behind Mark Winterbottom and Garth Tander at the Nikon SuperGP on the Gold Coast.
But the day didn’t start well for the Team with both Courtney and his Team Mate Steven Johnson off the pace in the twenty minute “all in” qualifying session .Courtney would start Race 20 from P13 and Johnson from P19 in the first of the days 150km sprints. But sometimes being out of the top 10 around the tight Gold Coast circuit can be an advantage as it was in this case when shortly after the start the first Safety Car was called when McConville and Coulthard had major contact at the end of pit exit putting both their cars out of the race. With a restart after 3 laps, both Courtney and Johnson began their assault through the field with both cars taking advantage of a safety car after the pit window opened forcing The Team to “double stack” both cars for tyres and fuel which would for many other Teams put a great deal of pressure on the pit crews. But the crew showed what they are capable of doing by timing the double stack perfectly with Courtney being released from the pit bay just as Johnson was on approach.
Courtney and Johnson then settled back into a more confident race rhythm finishing Part A of Race 20 in 5th and 6th respectively which was an outstanding effort from both boys with Courtney improving 8 spots and Johnson an incredible 13 positions from where they started and putting the boys on the third row of the grid for the last race of the weekend with The Team back in a position to bag some valuable Championship Points and possible podiums.
The start of the last race of the weekend caught everyone by surprise after an incident at the first chicane involving contact between Russell Ingall (P4) and Craig Lowndes (P1). Under a full course yellow all Teams where notified by Race Control to form up in original race starting positions before the restart.
Both cars took their compulsory pit stops relatively early with Courtney re entering the race in P3 and Johnson slotting in behind Jason Bright in 5th. Both drivers played offensive and defensive strategies during the back half of the race with Johnson holding off a fast finishing Whincup at the chequered flag to claim 5th for Race 20 to end the weekend on a high note.
“It was an interesting weekend– especially with yesterday being a pretty average race” said Johnson.
“Today it seemed to come together a lot better and the boys did a great job with the car overnight and between races today. We found some car speed and we managed to stay out of the carnage which at this circuit is no mean feat. I am pretty happy with the end result”
Courtney also had a clean race crossing the line and taking third place and a podium for Race 20.
“After some fast times in practice on Friday things were looking good for the Team” said Courtney at the post race press conference.
“And then Saturday came around and it all went south with a bad qualifying and a very average Race 19. It even rained on me last night when I was riding home from the circuit and I thought what else could happen to me. But today was a good day for the team. We had some amazing pit stops from the boys and we stayed out of trouble which gave us a great chance and a good result for the Team.”
“Bathurst was a big disappointment for us and now we are concentrating on race wins and making sure we stay in the Top Ten”.
After the four sprint races this weekend, Johnson is 6th and Courtney 9th in the Drivers Championship with Jim Beam Racing moving back into 3rd place in the Teams Championships.
The V8 Championship returns to Phillip Island starting on Saturday 7th November.
