The Johnsons ready to step back in time
10 August 2009
Dick and Steve will be attending the 14th Annual Historic Leyburn Sprints this weekend, 15 – 16 August, 2009. The event, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first Australian Grand Prix hosted in Queensland, runs on a disused airstrip on the outskirts of the small south-west Queensland community of Leyburn.
Over the event weekend, Leyburn’s population of around 300 grows to more than 15,000 fans and competitors, making it one of the biggest regional events staged in Queensland. Every year, competitors representing an enormous diversity of motoring interests come from far and wide to compete in 14 historic classes and an array of open wheelers. The 1100 meter circuit which plays host to this annual event winds around the houses and through the heart of Leyburn.
This year marks Dick’s third trip to the Leyburn Sprints and the event is definitely a highlight on the Johnson family calendar. Dick commented, “The Leyburn Sprints is always a good, relaxed weekend. You just get there and do what you have to do with no pressure. Although it is competition, there are no sheep stations on the line. It is just great to see so much history and passion for motorsport in the one place.”
