Davo and Johnson solid on the Coast
25 October 2008
A day of unpredictable weather on the Gold Coast had fans running for shelter at today’s Indy event, but the sun was out again for the weekends opening V8 Supercar race with Will Davison and Steve Johnson putting in solid performances for Jim Beam Racing.
Davison started from seventh on the grid, but a less than desirable race start had him fighting back for track position, pulling off a couple of slick moves to gain back the lost ground.
“It was just a bad start really, but I was able to peg back a couple of positions early, the guys did a great job in the pits and we re-entered in front of Dumbrell and we were able to hold onto seventh for the remainder of the race,” said Davison.
“It was tough going though; we need to find some more speed through these tight corners for tomorrow, I was lucky to be able to pull some moves off early after the poor start.”
Davison got more than he bargained for when the side mirror of his #18 Jim Beam Falcon clipped one of the street circuits concrete barriers, shattering and entering the car through an air vent on the driver’s side window.
“That was a shock to the system I have never had something like that happen before, a whole heap of glass just shattered into my face so I was lucky nothing more serious came of that,” he said.
Steve Johnson started from 19th today, and some consistent lap times and good race strategy had him make his way up to 12th position where he will start tomorrow’s second race.
“We adapted to the situation and stayed out a lot longer than some of the other teams; we had some good clear track, the car was good and my lap times were really up there with the quickest in the field so we stayed out there and it paid off.” said Johnson.
“It was a shame we started from so far back but to make up seven spots is pleasing and it will really be a huge help for tomorrow,” he said.
Johnson had his qualifying session hampered by a red flag while he was on a flying lap yesterday, the session ended and he was left to start from 19th this afternoon.
V8 Supercar take to the circuit at 10:15am tomorrow morning.
