Strong start for Jim Beam Racing at Phillip Island
12 September 2008
Jim Beam Racing's Will Davison set the fourth-fastest time in opening practice for this weekend's V8 Supercar L&H 500 at Phillip Island, in a strong start for the team.
The #18 Falcon was at the top of the timesheets for the majority of the session, with Davison and team-mate Steve Johnson finishing with the fourth-fastest time of the afternoon, 1:33.7539.
"We're pleased with how the day went," Davison, who sits fifth in the V8 Supercar standings, said.
"The car was quick straight out of the box and we remained up there throughout the whole session.
"We learned a lot from the setup changes that we made and we've got a good platform for the rest of the weekend."
Johnson also recorded quick laptimes around the high-speed Victorian circuit, as the team looks for a strong result in Sunday's opening endurance race of the year.
"The car has been good all day, I'm feeling comfortable and our times are very competitive," he said.
"Obviously today is just practice, but it's a good way to start the weekend."
In the #17 Jim Beam Racing entry, Steve Owen and Warren Luff were 13th fastest - among the best of the drivers not competing fulltime in the championship.
The L&H 500 continues tomorrow at Phillip Island, with each driver from the two pairings contesting a practice session, qualifying session and 14-lap race ahead of Sunday's 500km encounter.
"Tomorrow will be a challenging day for all of the teams; we're pleased with the start we've made," Jim Beam Racing's sporting director Adrian Burgess, said.
"There'll be a lot of strategy with the two sprint races and all of the different scenarios which could play out, being able to think on your feet will be important in getting a good result."
